As an artist, Nicki combines the practice of scientific observation and observational painting. This multi-faceted art practice brings a unique blend of skills and outlook to contemporary painting while still acknowledging the formal aspects of art training. Her approach to creativity reflects the Renaissance artists where science and art were interconnected highlighting materiality in art. She brings a wealth of knowledge of materials and their uses within watermedia which is the cornerstone of her teaching. She is passionate about helping children and adults gain an appreciation of earth pigments and generating a dialogue on environmental issues.
Nicki’s most recent project was completed at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico in October 2023, where she was offered a Residency for one month. Current work includes the use of pigments extracted on location and processed into water-media. She taught at Ghost Ranch in 2025 and will return in 2026. Features of Nicki’s work includes the use of minerals, binders and surfaces to create paintings that imbue the character of the environment with a visceral character.
